description: Dual Identity was composed in 2005 and is dedicated to bassoonist Judith Farmer. The 4 minute piece sets out to show the "Dual Identity” of the instrument, which can sound quite energetic, but also very lyrical and sweet. Multiphonics are employed in the more forceful and groove-oriented passages of the composition. (G. Wolfgang)
review: In the performance notes for this contemporary composition, Gernot Wolfgang states that he "creates a symbiosis between the rhythmic energy of jazz and European traditions of concert music”. This advanced solo bassoon work is certainly densely packed rhythmically, but Wolfgang also throws in mulitphonics and even a newly invented dynamic (mf+) to good effect. (...) This Austrian-American composer has ingeniously crafted a fiendishly complex work that will compel any music college student into many a long practice session. There is an infectious perpetual motion to the work, a crisp preciseness to every note and instruction on the page – all of which asks for huge concentration from the player. And stay alert the performer must, as Wolfgang asks for mechanical precision yet with purpose and musical direction – the Dual Identity of the piece. Thoroughly recommended for advanced students. (Lawrence O’Rourke, Music Teacher – June 2008)
"...clever, finely-crafted, interesting modern work for the bassoon (...) Wolfgang's style is fundamentally atonal, but highly developmental, utilizing very interesting melodic and rhythmic motives to bind the music together. The influences of jazz and rock are clearly audible, and the entire structure has a wonderful sense of finesse and completion. (...) If you are looking for a tough-but-fun composition for your next performance, this neat work will fill the bill very well. I recommend it strongly to all you brave bassoonists out there looking for a nifty challenge. (Double Reed, Vol. 31.No. 2)
"... this little sketch for bassoon, which highlights both its energetic and its lyrical capabilities, is quite delightful. Even multiphonics are used imaginatively and to musically sensible effect, rather than displaying their more common function as exercises in ugliness. ..." (Walter Simmons, Fanfare Magazine, August 2008)
